The similarities between Shakespeare's play The Tempest and that of real life colonization seem to be similar in content, but can they explain the purpose behind Shakespeare play. The Tempest tell of a sorceress named Prospero who lives in an island with his daughter Miranda, his slaves Caliban and his helper Ariel. In the play Prospero is removed from the throne by his brother, his need to want to rule takes him to an island in which he is meet by the natives and taught about the island. Prospero is gifted with a magical book which he uses to take control of the island. He takes Caliban who is the son of the now king of the island as his slave. The tempest opens with the storm that Prospero causes to teach Alonzo a lesson for helping his bother remove him from his power. The storm can symbolize Prospero's anger and desperation for his situation. Once Duke of Milan, Prospero was removed from his throne 13 years prior losing his power completely. The anger that he feels toward Alonzo and his brother is the drive he has to live. After all the play is named the tempest which means a violent and windy storm which is representative of Prospero's feeling of resent toward his brother, as shown by the first scene in the play. The way he treats caliban and those around hims are that of a man who is resentful and takes it out on someone who he considers to be inferior. Prospero insults Caliban when ever he speaks to him saying such things as " I have used thee, Filth as thou art, with human care, and lodged thee In mine own cell" implying that he is worth less than filth and to his good luck Prospero made him into a beauty.
