The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Americans by Robert Frank, portray wealth as an idyllic and luxurious life, where the wealthy enjoy an easier life in comparison with the middle and lower class. In addition, the strong point of view of the narrator and the characters, gives a stereotypical insight into rich peoples lives, and how they were perceived by the middle and lower class as careless people. Also, the point of view of the narrator shows rich people as vain, and arrogant people, who do not know what to do with all the money they posses, and are constantly trying to fulfill something inside of them by spending their money in things they do not need. A massage and a wave, and a collar for the dog, and one of those cute little ash-trays where you touch a spring” (36), this passage shows how wealthy people were seen by the middle and lower class, Myrtle believes that the wealthy spend their money in things they do not need, and that they are very vain because all the things she supposedly needs to get, are very superficial like the massage and the cute ash-tray. Therefore, the reader can understand Myrtle’s perception of the upper class. In addition, for the middle and lower class the rich people were expected to spend their money in things they do not need. Also, she perceives rich people as arrogant, and she stars treating others as if they were below her, which is something that can be expected from the wealthy class like Tom who treats others as if they were worthless. In The Americans, a picture with a wealthy couple, the man wearing a suit and the woman a dress with a fur coat and jewelry. While the woman keeps a happy facial expression, the facial expression in the man is rather derogatory towards the woman as if he feels better than her.
