Similarities Between Shooting An Elephant And The Giver

In the short story “Shooting an Elephant”, by George Orwell, he describes a very important and challenging incident that occurs in his life. After an elephant comes to a village in Burma and destroys much of the town and kills a man, George has to decide whether to wait for the elephant’s owner to come and settle down the animal or to shoot and kill the elephant in front of thousands of Burmans in order to avoid possibly more destruction or deaths. In the novel “The Giver”, written by Lois Lowry, she writes about a fictional new world that lives by a new lifestyle that consist of the people not having to worry about anything such as pain or emotions. Orwell describes to his audience about the situation and his belief before approaching the elephant and the changes in belief as he came into contact with the elephant and after he had shot and killed the animal. He shares his hatred for “imperialism” and it eventually helped him come to his final decision (Orwell 134). In a way he helped the people of the village not because he was killing an irrational elephant but because he was providing food for the native Burman’s, which in the end contradicted the ways of imperialism. In Lois Lowry’s novel “The Giver”, she emphasizes on the indefinite future of the society and memories Jonas had tried to give to the others. In the end both Orwell and Jonas were not altogether content about the shooting of the elephant but there was not much else they could do in the situation and had to deal with the consequences of the choices they made in the situation they were dealt
