After the arrival of Léger Félicité Sonthonax, and Etienne Polverel, on September 17, 1792, the change with the colony would seem remarkable. Although men were both free, wealthy, and trained in law, they were both invested in the radical and antislavery movement. Sonthonax once wrote in the newspaper Révolutions de Paris, “Yes, we dare to predict with confidence that the day will come—and the day is not too far off—when you will see a curly-haired African, relying only on his virtue and good sense, coming to participate in the legislative process in the midst of our national assemblies.” (Dubois 143). Much to the dismay of the peoples of France, the two commissioners continued to rise to power in Saint Domingue. They were intolerant of the racial prejudice against the free coloreds. They managed to gain political rights for the free coloreds of Saint Domingue. Their intentions were not to end slavery, however, they were able to make a massive dent in the movement to liberty. L’ouverture former lieutenant Dessalines, became the new leader of the revolution. He led many successful battles, including the French army at Battle of Vertières. Eventually, the French finally decided to give up the colony. The island, became the independent Haiti on January 1, 1804, with Dessalines as its new emperor. He proved to be a cruel emperor when he made orders for the rest of the white population to be killed, also known as the 1804 Massacre of Haiti. A couple of years after, Dessalines was assassinated by a group of conspirators on October 17, 1806 (Corbett). Although the after effects of revolution were not ideal, the peoples of Saint Domingue achieved what they were craving, which was
