America in the 1950s was more than just poodle skirts and rock roll, there was segregation and ruthless Jim Crow Laws. In America now, there is still racism and not everyone is treated equally. Somethings that are similar between 1950 and now are women are not paid equally, blacks have a lower employment rate, colored people do not have equal educational settings and there are still racial tensions. Somethings that are different from today and 1950 are schools were segregated, America was afraid of communism, now women are aloud to get jobs and work, and you do not have to take a test to be able to vote. Many characteristics of America are the same as they were in the 1950s, but there are also many differences.

On difference would be that schools were segregated in the 1950s. There were different schools for whites-which had supplies, desks, teachers for each class and separate classrooms- and colored people- they looked like shacks, they were cluttered, and one teacher taught four or five grades in one classroom- these schools were supposed to be “separate but equal” which they were obviously not. Now all schools are integrated even though they still are not all “equal”. Also in the 1950s, there were Jim Crow Laws. Some examples of the laws are any interracial marriage will be punished and imprisoned or fined, a colored barber could not cut a white women’s hair, as well as, colored people cannot go to the parks that are maintained for the use of white people. These laws were unfair for colored people because apparently white people were so “superior” and black people should not be allowed to even touch them or look at them. These laws existed in America for eighty-nine years. Another difference between now and then is America was afraid of communism in the 1950. It says in the article, “The 1950s”, History.com, states, “Many people in the United States worries that communists could destroy American society from the inside as well as from the outside.” Now in America instead of communism, we are afraid of terrorists like ISIS. Also today, women are allowed to have jobs and work. In the 1950s, women had to leave their jobs-given to them from the men going to fight in World War II- and stay home and be perfect wives. In the article, “The 1950s”, History.com says, “Advice books and magazine articles urged women to leave the workforce and embrace their roles as wives and mothers”. Now women can take their part in workplaces all over America. Voting was another thing in the 1950s that was not allowed for anyone but whites. A black person could not vote unless they took a
