Through the epics The Odyssey by Homer and Beowulf written by an anonymous anglo saxon poet, we can learn about the values and beliefs of different cultures through the actions of their heroes, but these heroes are from different cultures and therefore have different values, sometimes even conflicting ones. So what common ground do these heroes share, and when their ideals differ how dose the differences make them a hero in it’s own way? They both have a belief in a higher power a source of fate that guides their actions, a need for glory and riches, and a fatal flaw that they strive to work against but ultimately cannot overcome. That’s about where the similarities end, Beowulf relies on strength while Odysseus relies chiefly on the power
