Welcome ladies and gentlemen. We are here today to remember Simon Birch. I am Joe Wentworth, Simons’ best friend. Simon was a very close friend of mine. Simon believed that god made him special for a reason and that he was god’s instrument. We became best friends because we were both known as outsiders. Today I want to share a few special memories we gave.
One memory I have of Simon is, he helped me find my father. When we both thought Mr. Baker was my father, he was willing to help me break in his office to find evidence, but once we didn’t find the baseball that killed my mother in his room, we gave up. Later on, while I was on the church retreat Simon broke into Reverend Russel office to get back his baseball cards. While he was in there, he found the baseball on one of his shelfs proving Reverend Russel is my dad. When I found out reverend Russel was my dad I was shocked and didn’t want to believe it.
A second memory I’m going to share is Simon always got in trouble at church. One day while Reverend Russel was talking, Simon interrupted him and disagreed with what he said. Simon got in time out because he felt like what he did wasn’t wrong so he didn’t apologize. Another time when he got in trouble was in the middle of the Christmas pageant, Marjorie was leaning over him

After the Retreat, on our way home there was a deer in the middle of the road. To prevent hitting it the bus swerved into the woods and landed in the lake. The reverend was knocked out and the bus driver left us so I thought I had to save these kids all by myself, until Simon stepped up and took full control. All the kids listened to him and we led them off the bus one by one. Simon was the only one that noticed one kid was missing and went back for him. I was very proud of Simon. After struggling for a while, we finally got everyone back on land and took Simon to the hospital. At the hospital Simon dies and I lost my best friend. I was
