Simone Manuel was born to Marc and Sharron On August second nineteen-ninetysix. She was introduced to swimming through her two brothers, who swam on a summer team. She then was asked to join the swim team and started lessons. She was a quality swimmer and by age eleven was swimming for First Colony Swim Team. Simone made it to the two thousand and twelve Olympic Trials. She placed 17th in the 100-meter freestyle and 20th in the 50-meter freestyle. She then went on to college at Stanford University, where she kept swimming and chasing her dreams of being in the Olympics. In her first year there she broke three records, the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle and the 200-meter freestyle. Then in two thousand fifteen she became one of the first three African American women to be in the top three spots of 100-yard freestyle in a Division I NCAA Swimming Championship. …show more content…
On August sixth she races in the women's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay along with Katie Ledecky, Abbey Weitzeil and Dana Vollmer. The relay won silver behind Australia who won gold. Then on August eleventh Manuel tied with Penny Oleksiak from Canada for gold in the women’s 100-meter freestyle. They both set an Olympic record. This win made Simone Manuel the first African-American women, and black women to win gold individual event for swimming. She also won silver in 50-meter freestyle and gold in the 4x100-meter medley relay with Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, and Dana Vollmer. Simone wanted to be an inspiration to others. “For people who believe that they can’t do it. I hope I’m an inspiration to others to get out there and try swimming. You might be pretty good at it”
