Feelings for situational irony

In the two short stories “The Necklace” Guy de Maupassant and “The Ransom Red Chief” O.Henry the authors use situational irony to affect the readers emotion. Both stories show the unexpected turn in the stories that would not expect in any other short story. In the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant uses situational irony to show the feeling pity and sorrow. For example, Mathilde believes she is the richest of the rich but she ends up being the poorest of the poor. The narrator says “Mine Loisel looked old now, She had become the woman of impoverished households strong hard and rough.”(5). Mathilde works so hard just to lose her house, money, and her beauty. The readers feel sorry for her because she is now in a much lower social class then she was before. Another example of situational irony in the story is when the necklace ends up being fake. For example Johnny did not care that he was kidnapped and he did not want to stay at home or abe at school. Johnny tells Bill and Sam, ”Aw, what for?””says he. I don't have any fun at home. I hate to go to school. i like to camp out. you won't take me back home again snake eye, will you? ”(41). Normally a child who gets kidnapped would respond with running away or being afraid and trying to escape. Johnny's reactions to getting kidnapped is very surprising and funny to the reader. Another example of situational irony in the story is when the kidnapped pay to bring Johnny back home. Sam tells Bill “What’s $250 after all? We’ve got the money. One more night of this kid will send me to bed in bedlam.”(53) Instead of the kidnappers receiving money they pay money to send the child back home which bring humor to the story.
