Skink - No Surrender, is a book written by Carl Hiaasen and took place in Myrtle Beach, Florida. The main characters are a 14 year old boy named Richard Sloan, and an old governor named Clint Tyree. The character I will be focusing on the most is Richard, and how he develops throughout the text. Richard Sloan is your average teenage boy who likes to fish and use electronics. He lives with his mother and stepfather. His birth father died in a UPS incident. He regularly takes walks with his close cousin Malley on the beach in the evening. Here and there Malley will not go on the walks mainly because she is grounded, but this time she wasn’t. Richard tries to get a hold of her, but she will not answer her phone at all. After a few mishaps with the governor, Richard has to take the wheel, literally. Skink’s foot got run over by an eighteen-wheeler, and could not operate the gas and brake of the car currently. After finally getting to Malley and her kidnapper, they made it out alive, barely. Throughout the story Richard changes the way he sees things because of Skinks actions, like when he decided to help the baby and the momma skunk across the road and got hit by the eighteen-wheeler. He thinks more about others now and is more careful what he does and says to others. He has a new mindset, and will never be able to thank Skink more. “My father used to say that you live most of your life inside your own head, so make sure it's a good space.” (Hiaasen 218). Skink said that for Richard to give him some of his amazing advice. Another quote of his is “nature teaches it’s beasts to know their friends.” After Skink left Jem he never would know where he would be without Skink.
