Slaughterhouse-Five Reader’s Response
Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five was an anti-war book, focusing on the bombing in Dresden, Germany, and the author’s experience as a POW in WWII. Usually, a book with this theme would be difficult to read seriously, as a similar book would usually be dramaticized, but the way the author wrote, it as much more personal, and less glorified than other pieces to come out of the war.
Slaughterhouse Five was a book focusing on the less than glamorous side of war. By focusing on the treatment of prisoners of war and other of his own experiences, and not the main picture as most novels focusing on war do, I was able to connect more to some of the characters and themes.
