Haven’t you ever wondered what caused the Civil War? Or what happened after? It was a lot more than just controversy between the Union, and Confederacy. Some examples are, slave codes which were harsh restrictions on the slaves’ already limited freedom, and black codes were after the Civil War, that continued to suppress their freedom. Also, another cause of the Civil War was the Fugitive Slave Acts, that allowed anyone to return runaway slaves back to their owner. The Abolitionist Movement that also began the Civil War, was the movement to try to free all the slaves, and to have the same rights between the black and white people. Also, segregation was one of the effects of the Civil War which was the separation between white and blacks. …show more content…
Slave Codes established the status of the slaves in each state, and it placed harsh restrictions and rules against the slaves. Slave Codes gave absolute power the the slave owners to control the slaves. An example of a slave code is, in the tobacco colonies (Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia) the slave code there was that slaves cannot possess any kind of weapons, they could never leave their owner’s plantation, and they could never lay a hand on any white person. Black Codes, were used after the Civil War, when the slaves were free. White people still wanted to degrade the African Americans by suppressing them with laws and restrictions. An example of a Black Code is they were not allowed to vote unless owning property, this was so most African Americans couldn’t vote because most of them didn’t own any kind of property. Even though the African Americans were not slaves anymore, they weren’t exactly free. Segregation made the whites and blacks use different bathrooms, school, water fountains, employment, and housing opportunities. This really dehumanized the African Americans because they felt like one wanted to be around them because they were black, also the things they were offered were not as high quality of what the white got. This benefited the South because they were still getting their way. The African Americans were not truly free until 1964, 88 years later. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the official act that ended all segregation in public places, and banned all employment discrimination towards the African Americans. John F. Kennedy proposed this idea to the Congress, and the Congress agreed to the act and signed. This truly benefited the African Americans and they were finally treated equally. After many hurdles and struggles, they were finally free. There were many things that caused the Civil War, and many struggles after the Civil War. I wish that people would have opened their eyes a long time ago about how wrong slavery was, and it would have saved the African Americans a lot of suffering. I believe every person is equal and is the same. So much has changed and kids these days wouldn't notice skin color if people didn't point it
