Slavery was an important cause of the Civil War, because of the varied implications in the political, economic, and social spheres. One reason was due to the Northern fear of slavery moving to other territories. Southerners were enraged as any bans on slavery in newly acquired territories threatened their way of life. Roark mentioned that “In 1847, Senator Lewis Cass of Michigan offered a compromise through the doctrine of popular sovereignty, by which the people who settled the territories would decide for themselves slavery’s fate.” Southerners swarmed to the unoccupied territories so that they voted to keep slavery alive.
