The affects Slavery has on America today This day in time, no one conjectured the existence or could they accept the harshness and demining treatment the African American people has faced even after slavery was over. Even though they were now free of masters and their chains, there were still situations that lingered in where someone would still see themselves as not equal and free. The laws of Jim Crowe were in full affect and still had a way of reminding African Americans that they were still less of a person than the whites. The reality of slavery is well known in American and still exists. In 1865, however, the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery, making it completely illegal. During the 17th and 18th centuries Slaves were completely dependent on their slave-owners. Slave owners sought to make their slaves completely dependent on them, and a system of restrictive codes governed life among slaves. And while the price of slaves has gone down, the return on the slaveholder's investment has skyrocketed. In the antebellum South, slaves brought an average return of about 5 percent. Now bonded agricultural laborers in India generate more than a 50 percent profit per year for their slaveholders, and a return of 800 percent is not at all uncommon for holders of sex slaves.” (Bales, 2014). Reading and writing was forbidden, and their every move was controlled by their owners. Slave women especially were sexually abused. If they were to refuse they would be punished. In historical slavery men and women were beaten mercilessly, separated from loved ones arbitrarily, and, regardless of sex, treated as property in the eyes of the law. (Hallam, 2014) Modern slavery is the same as historical slavery just with a different name. Slavery can affect people of any age and gender. Human trafficking is an example of Modern Slavery. For example, traffickers gives a loan for travel, food, and shelter. In return the victims have to reimbursement the debt the accrued and they cannot leave until they debt is
