As slavery took an important part of the economy of the southern colonies between 1619 and 1750, economic, geographic, and social factors encouraged the growth of slavery. Slavery had a huge impact in not only in other people’s lives, but for the slaves as well. Even though slavery was a brutal and forcible social issue, it economically, geographically, and socially encouraged its growth by the need for slaves for the plantations, mistreated, and recognized as unsimilar people. For slavery’s economic factors, it encouraged the growth of slavery because tobacco and sugar plantations were a very important business. Because tobacco and sugar was so valuable, these plantations needed as many slaves as they could receive in order for them to labor. …show more content…
Not only were they mistreated and limited from certain rights, but they were distinguished as unequal people. And because of their “different color”, the white believed that they had the dominant power over the blacks. Equality was never mentioned between whites and blacks. And with these social factors, the word racism came along. The Bacon’s Rebellion of 1676 passed laws tightening the legal definition of slavery because it got out of control sometimes, due to how unfair it was to the slaves. But in 1739, when the slaves were distressed from the orders, the Stono Rebellion was where the slaves rebelled and killed whites. Because of this revolt, it brought fear to the whites and when slave codes were created, and many privileges were taken away from slaves. As you can see, economic, geographic, and social factors encouraged the growth of slavery as an important part of the economy of the southern colonies between 1619 and 1750. Whether it was because slaves were needed for plantations, mistreated, and recognized as different people, it encouraged their growth.
