In an institution known as Hard Work U., the concept of rest is something that is often overlook by many within its community.
Lori Vanderpool, nurse at the McDonald clinic, stated in an email that most college age adults suffer from sleep deprivation due to studying, socializing, or working extra off campus to meet financial obligations.
“Sleep plays a critical role in thinking and learning. Lack of sleep hurts these cognitive processes in many ways. First, it impairs attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem solving. This makes it more difficult to learn efficiently,” Vanderpool stated. “If sleep deprivation continues long enough, it puts the individual’s overall health status at risk. The immune system is weakened and viral illnesses such as colds, stomach viruses, and even the Flu can strike resulting in missing classes, work, and social functions. However, Chinn said rest is so much more than a physical break, it’s an aspect of life that is both modeled and mandated by God.
Chinn said he thinks God is defining rest as the time you step away from the work he has called you too in order to participate in activities that are “life-giving, that cause you to be restored, refreshed, reinvigorated, slow the pace of life down (in order) to actually pay attention to what God is doing in creation.”
The biblical concept of “resting well” can be engaged through a many different ways, Chinn said, and can look different from person to person.
