Introduction Small Animal Veterinarians are licensed medical professionals that are qualified to diagnose and treat a variety of companion animals. As such, small animal veterinarians not only protect the health and welfare of animals, but also that of society as a whole. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), there are approximately 47,000 companion animal practitioners in the United States. While many of these veterinarians choose to work exclusively on small animals, such as cats and dogs, others may operate mixed practices that also provide equine or other large animal veterinary services. I will talk about training requirements, where they work, work environment, salary, and jobs.

After completing the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), you have to take the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) to be able to practice in the U.S.
There are 30 vet schools in the US that are accredited or pending accreditation. It is very competitive to get into vet school. There are no vet school in the state of South Carolina. If were to go to Clemson they have reserved spots with the University of Georgia for applicants.
Since there aren’t any vet schools in South Carolina, so you would have to pay out-of-state tuition which around, $46,352. After graduating vet school most are in debt around $135,000. This all adds up after adding tuition from an undergraduate school.
Small animal veterinarians can continue their education and training through internships, residencies, academic and corporate research, and military programs. These experiences allow veterinarians to specialize and become board certified in a variety of fields, including animal welfare, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, and surgery, to name a few. Additionally, veterinarians also continue their education and training by attending conferences, certification short-courses, and training workshops.
