Pistol Shrimp, also known as Snapping Shrimp or Alpheus Shrimp, is surprisingly very cool. The main characteristic of this organism are their claws and what they can do with it. These claws functions as a handgun, or pistol to be exact, and are used to target other shrimps for food. Even though the whole process, from the time the claws snaps shut to the bubble bursting, is very complex, it all happens in less than a second, 300 microseconds to be exact. In detail, when the claws shut, it fires a bubble bullet that travels 62 mph, and once it reaches its target, the bubble bursts and the prey gets stunned. The temperature of the bubble is surprisingly 4700 degrees Celsius, just a little below the temperature of the sun. Based on all the discoveries discovered thus far, the Pistol Shrimps are considered to be the …show more content…
When the bubble burst, it also creates sonoluminescence, which is when a brief duration of light flashes. Although having snapping claws help this creature capture its prey, their claws may change as time passes by. The two claws that this organism have are not proportional to one other; one claw is the snapping claw, and the other claw is a regular small claw. Over time, the snapping claw loses its limb and turns into a small claw, while the small claw grows into a snapping claw. Aside from that, these poor creatures also having poor eyesight, but thankfully, they have a symbiotic relationship with the goby fish. The goby fish would make up for the Pistol Shrimp’s poor vision, signaling the shrimp with its tail movement, while the shrimp builds burrows to protect the fish and give it a habitat. Burrows are usually made under rocks and shells during the day, but can also be found around oyster reefs. Without these goby fish, the Pistol Shrimp may be in big danger due to poor eyesight, which can lead to inaccurate gunshot, or claw
