Social Class In Ayn Rand's Anthem

FAs the victim of government’s Communist ideology, Ayn Rand introduced her story to show how depressing to live as one society instead of one person. Even though Ayn Rand explained it in her novel “ Anthem”“ I wasn’t taking my revenge on my background. Because if it were that I would have been writing stories laid in Russia or projecting them.” ( Anthem, page- 9 ), she rooted in her background to create the society in “Anthem” to show the role of social class. The characters in “Anthem” do not have the right to express their feeling individually but as a whole. The word “I” do not even exist in their language. Ayn Rand then created Equality 7- 2521 and Liberty 5- 3000 from the bottom class of the society to overcome the law of the society and to repossess the word “I” in “Anthem” to reclaim freedom as one person. All of his desires and his wishes are not matters to the society because of his class. Instead of revolting against the powerful people, he says “ The will of our brothers be done” ( Anthem, page- 26) and gladly accepted his job as street sweeper because he was taught that the Councils are the voice of the Justice ( Anthem, page- 22). As the bottom class, Equality 7- 2521 is not the only one who is being sent to the Home of street sweepers. His friend International 4- 8818 is also sent to the Home of street sweepers by the Home of Artists because International 4- 8818 draws a picture on the wall without the consent of the Home of Artists. Hence, Ayn Rand reveals the weakness of the bottom class against the powerful people in her book “Anthem” through Equality 7- 2521 and International 4- 8818, and how they could not even choose what they want to do in their life but fulfill the Councils of Vocations’
