It’s important to consider that social competence plays a big role into social-emotional development. Looking back to my elementary and junior high years I would consider myself as having average social competence. During my elementary years it was very difficult to surround myself with other children. As an english language learner from kindergarten to 3rd grade I was isolated from other children. During recess I hardly interacted or played because I didn’t understand what was said to me. It took about 3 years in order for me to fully adapt, and understand english. After being separated for so long I did became very shy. I didn’t have many friends and I felt as though no one really cared. Transitioning into my junior high years I did became a different person. I met new people, joined public speaking classes, and eventually became president of the Debate club.
As a child coming from immigrant parents my family income status was low. My father was the only provider of the house and my mother was a housewife. I did lived through the worse moments of poverty. However, it didn’t affected my social competence as expected. Instead I seeked

You had to be Dominican, Puerto Rican, attractive, and funny. I attended an elementary school where majority of the population was Dominican and Puerto rican. I was one out of three kids who were only Mexican. As a Mexican child I was pointed out for just being different. Although teachers enforced the non bullying policy it never changed the student's mindset of what culture ran the school. The most popular person in my elementary school was a boy name Kewin. Kewin was popular for his charisma, and good sense of humor. He socialize with almost anyone that ever approached him. He was smart and good looking. Everyone knew about Kevin athletic skills as well. Teachers and other staff had high expectations that Kewin one day will become an NBA
