Evidently, extreme social control comes with the cost of fear, suffering and oppression of its citizens, which undoubtedly creates immensive harm. In this case, New Middletown’s citizens have been made to adapt to “Nesting”, which is an extreme social control, that makes all children behave “good,” by persuading its citizens with the use of deception. For example, only informing parents with the “benefits” such as “no more constant battles, no mouthing off, [and] no fighting over homework” (Austen, p. 109), while not including the whole painful truth.
