Social Injustice: Slavery Slavery is a system where people are treated like property. They are bought and sold, made to work, just like farm animals. Sometimes they are under even worse conditions, though. They are held against their will, they have almost no human rights. This means they can’t leave their owners, they can’t complain that their owners are abusing them, and they can’t refuse to work. Slavery has been made illegal in some countries now, but in other countries, slavery can come in different forms such as debt bondage, indentured servitude, serfdom, and as domestic servants. In the present time, there are more slaves than there ever were before in history. Today, slavery is still practiced in Sudan, Niger, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Indonesia. In India, Nepal, and Pakistan, bonded slavery is widely practiced. There are laws against slavery in these countries, but they aren’t enforced. Some groups that are working to stop slavery are: Anti-Slavery International, and Free the Slaves. We should support these groups and make them known so that slavery can be reduced. Slavery has been around for a long, long time. Slavery was mentioned in the earlier historical recordings. Even in the Code of Hammurabi, the earliest of all recordings, slavery was mentioned. It is estimated that today, there are about twenty-seven million slaves today, three quarters of them female, and half of them children. The average slave in present time costs around $90.
