Communication is one of the expensive tools needed in our community. Generally communication is defined as the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information through speeches, writings, or signs. With communication, brings the idea of bilingual education or bilingualism. Bilingualism is the ability of one to speak two languages just not speaks it but actually to speak those two languages fluently. In other words, bilingualism is the habitual use of two languages. Bilingual education has been a headache for most developed and developing countries as to whether embrace it or neglect it. As a controversial issue such as this, many people and countries have been placed into a tight corner whether to enroll or institute the idea of bilingualism in schools, work places, stores and in the country in a whole. In support of this, famous person Charlemagne advocates bilingualism and in one of his speeches he made it clear to the people that “to have another language is to possess a second soul.” Why would you advocate a one-language system when you know for sure that you feel bad when others are talking in their language and they sort of neglect or ignore you in the conversation? People who are bilingual have no regret for being so because of the advantages that comes their way. The following are some of the major advantages that come with bilinguals and bilingualism. Although monolingual is appreciated, Bilingualism must be instituted in schools and in the states in general because it increases productivity, cultural interactions are enhanced, boost the IQ of bilinguals and also contribute to a person’s growth. One of the major advantages of bilingualism or multilingualism in our country is that, it increases productivity. With the help of bilingualism instituted in our country, many entrepreneurs from all walks of life have collaborated to provide and create jobs, organizations, business firms and many others. The benefits of speaking not only English is one every individual could cherish. Employers are obliged according to the Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Shipyard Employment Standard number 1915.16 that there has to be a comprehension of signs and labels. It is the duty of the employer to ensure that each sign or label posted is presented in a manner that can be perceived and understood by all employees (Amy). Here is the case where instructions provided to execute the job is giving to the right person who can do the job but unfortunately for him it is written in a language he cannot even read then talk about comprehend. When this happened there is no way productivity would increase. When there is no bilingualism, employers would be forced to hire unfit personnel to do the required job just because they can speak English or other language.
In additions to this, doors to government jobs are also opened with the help of multilingual education. According to estimates, for around twenty percent of all Americans, English is only a secondary language, actually this percentage of people speak other languages in their homes. A Meaningful number of these people are immigrants and minorities in the United States. Due to this reason many government jobs, especially those that involve or require dealing with minorities and immigrants or formulating of policies with regards to them (minorities) requires bilinguals (Dogra). These kinds of jobs require applicants to be bilingual and with individuals being bilingual it helps secure many government jobs for those individuals which in the end will increase productivity. Furthermore bilingual individuals get access to many choices and ideas in the working sector due to their ability to speak more than one language. Various researches also proofs that with bilingualism, individuals arise as better problem-solver and is efficient in multitasking and taking down a duty or task (Pillai).
