It is Taylor’s thirteenth birthday. She rips open her big present. Shocked and surprised, she jumps up and down; it’s an Iphone- just what she wants. Taylor seems to be living the life with her new phone and her Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, everything. Weeks later, her mom, begins to worry. All Taylor does is play on her phone. Her mom notices some differences in Taylor, she’s tired, sometimes sad, and hardly talks to her family. In Taylor’s case and hundreds like this, social media damages teen’s mental, physical, and social strengths.
For Taylor, social media is as destructive to her character and as is drugs and alcohol. They both have powerful methods of altering one's mental state. Teens can feel on top of the world one minute, with social media, that feeling can vanish in a matter of two seconds. In Taylor’s social media life and many other teens, it’s often hard to ignore a mean comment even if it’s from a complete stranger. Sleep is important, especially to teens; who need an abundant amount. In a 2015 article by Agata Blaszcak-Boxe, on Livescience a report said, “’Since adolescence is a vulnerable period for development of long-term issues, it is essential that we understand how adolescents’ social media use relates to’ factors like sleep quality…” Teens might lose sleep for multiple reasons. For instance, teens might feel the need to be involved with the instantaneous status updates because they want to get in. Or maybe they are being bullied and the stress keeps them up.
