American pop culture derives from multiple sources such as music, art, sports, clothing trends, and technology. These works strive to get our attention and form an audience. Technology has formed one of these audiences, as a matter of fact, one of the largest in the world. But what draws the public to spend so much time and energy on these tech devices? The answers lies within social media. Along the lines of any popular culture, American people strive to find a way to unify among large masses of individuals. That is why online users join groups and organizations, like clubs and churches. Social media allows us to be apart of the online community, which is not based off location or space. In general these groups are usually not discriminate or exclusive. They also tend not to have barriers of entry. Users can even be apart of multiple groups, even if they are conflicting. As a group that meets up a few times a week in the real world, online users also have the ability to remain connected. With community, comes members, which leads to unity. Engineers have created tools to support and reconnect people. Tools such as chat room and skype that use live chat and sometimes video to connect with people, even if they’re half way around the world! People who re-connect via social media is very rewarding. Classmates that you may have not made a connection with because of cliques or seperation in highschool or college, usually connect in new and interesting ways!
