In the early 1960s to 1970s many counter cultures began to emerge from the

Depths of the younger generations. Many claimed war opposition as their cause, others

Sexual preference. Others saw free speech as an issue and others saw the conformity of

Government as a catalyst for their protesting and opposing view. A midst these topics

Was also the issue of women s rights, minority racial groups and environmental groups.

One particular event that sparked the element of war protest was at Berkeley University

In September of 1964 returning from a freedom school in Mississippi ,Mario Saviosaw the intolerance That the school had initiated towards students in protest. Students

used to be able to pass Out pamphlets and such beyond the school on Telegraph Ave

and the Bancroft Strip, However now with the help of the HUAC( House Un-American

Activities Committee) their rights being taken away so sparked a chain of events

In what was the first campus sit in Savio gave a speech stating:

“ That there come a time when the machine becomes so repulsive, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all.''
