The internet has grown incredibly since the introduction of the World Wide Web in 1990, and for the most part that has been a wonderful innovation. Almost every company and government agency now has some sort of server and websites intended for use by the common people. One key feature of many of these websites is the ability to take in and store personal information. There are hundreds of websites that are commonly used that require some form of registration in order to use them properly, and these registrations tend to ask for, at the very least, names, birth dates, emails, and phone numbers, as well as any other more personal data used specifically by that company.When any kid first puts their hands on a computer, they are told many times “whatever you put on the internet stays there forever, and anything you don’t want there will never leave”, but if this is true, why are so many people so quick to throw their bank and credit card information at whatever website happens to have the items they want at the time, and why are we so trusting of online job applications that require our social security number and criminal …show more content…
However, even all this may still not be enough to protect the information they store, especially if the person trying to hack them has a lot of experience and really wants to break into the site. In 2015, millions of healthcare accounts had been hacked, through multiple companies, and all of the confidential information for those users had been compromised. Data breaches in the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, UCLA Health System, and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield healthcare companies affected over 15 million people that year alone.
