As Elena started her first day at college she worries about making new friends. Elena has always been a shy person since she was a little girl, making it harder for her to make friends. The friends she made in high school was introduced to her through a friend she had known since kindergarten. Elena only knows one other person who attends the university with her, but with her friend working during the week she barely sees her. Elena knows she has to break out of her shell in order for her to make friends, but she doesn’t know where to start. Some students feel the same way as Elena when entering their first year of college. It is especially hard for people who are shy or reserved, and don’t know where to start looking for friends. Join a volunteer group that helps out at the animal shelter, and clean up the school or park. Since other students will be there you can start a conversation to help the time go by. You could talk about random things or why they chose to volunteer with that organization. Since you’re both doing something that you are interested in then there is a chance you will have more in common. Similar to volunteering, joining a club is a way to connect with people that have the same interest as you. Campuses offer different clubs based on majors and things that students around campus are interested in. Most colleges will have club fairs throughout the year to get more people involved. Just by attending the fair you can get a feel on what the group will be like by talking to representatives. You could just got to a club meeting and have an open mind about making new friends.
