Societal Conflict: Gender Roles Growing up in a society where females have virtually the same opportunities as men, I have never experienced rigid gender roles and expectations. Unfortunately however, this is still a large problem in many modern societies. A common cause of societal conflict in Things Fall Apart and modern day is gender roles and expectations. This issue continues to affect women because some people think that women are the lesser gender.
