When I was a high school student, I noticed that my high school was performing worse and deteriorating academically as the years went by. Flashing back on this, I questioned why was my high school performing worse each year, and why were other schools getting better in my area. This trend began to have detrimental effects on the student’s education since it created inequality in the quality of education people in my high school were receiving. The white flight phenomenon and residential segregation created the inequality on the quality of education and resources available to current students in K-12 education.

Most of the neighborhoods in the areas surrounding my school were divided by the family’s socioeconomic status. This creates residential segregation and social stratification. I felt socially stratified because I was labeled as a person coming from a lower socioeconomic status. I did not live in an affluent area and for this, I could only go the deteriorating high school in my area instead of the private high school on the other side of the town. The amount of money from the local taxes of the businesses and neighborhoods contribute to the funding of the school. Since the area I lived in was of a lower economic status as well as a slightly elevated level of poverty, the schools did not receive as much funding compared to other affluential high schools. My classroom size would be much larger, the restroom facilities were at times very filthy, and there was a lack of resources such as books that students could utilize for their classes. For this, I felt personally disadvantaged since I did not have the money to go to a more affluent high school where the education quality and the education resources were
