What is the difference between sex and gender?
Our sex is purely the biological differences between men and women. What chromosomes you are born with, your body hair, your hormones and your internal and external sexual anatomy. Gender however is the socially constructed characteristics that we define as either masculine or feminine. ‘Gender norms’ are the created specific entitlements and responsibilities to men and women which affect all aspects of our everyday social life.

From the minute we are born we begin the learning process of fitting into our societies set concepts and ideas of what it means to be male or female. We learn what clothes to wear and how to behave in public. Many of your parents will have picked out the colour of your room, the colour of your clothes and the toys they brought you, even before you have arrived into the world. Do you think babies care about what colour their room is or what toys they play with? Of course not. According to Kohlberg it is not until the age of four years old that we reach the level of cognitive development to understand what it means to be male or female and the heavy influence it has on external features. These early years as our brains develop are critical in our understanding of the world around us and how we are to behave in the future.
