In every social group, every member has a unique role. In the story the
Outsiders
by
S. E. Hinton, 17 year old Sodapop Curtis is hardworking, smart, and athletic. In fact, Soda is
Ponyboy’s idol, he has positive attitude which helps diffuse some of the stress and tension in the gang especially between his brothers, and Sodapop is the reason that Darry and Ponyboy stay together.
Sodapop helps pay the bills at home by working at a gas station with Steve after he dropped out of highschool. Although Soda doesn't want Pony to drop out of high school, he's happy with his own choice to do so. His choice to drop out of school was the only thing that bothered Ponyboy. He likes his work at the gas station, and says he wasn't getting anything out of school. Sodapop is always happy and cheery, which lightens the gangs mood, especially with the Curtis brothers. Compared to his brothers, Sodapop is the happier, most caring one.
He once took care a horse that he named Mickey Mouse. He loved Mickey, but one day he got sold by his original owners and Soda never saw him again. Then when
Ponyboy was ill, Soda stayed with him most of the time and even became exhausted by doing so, proving that he loved his brother very much.
Since childhood, Ponyboy idolized his older brother Sodapop. Ponyboy likes Soda because he listens to him and tries to demonstrate interest in his actions. Sodapop was often there for Ponyboy when he was having issues with Darrell, his eldest brother. There was heavy tension between Ponyboy and Darry. Darry was constantly on Ponyboy’s back
