The Value of Life

Many girls are just out having fun and then they get lured into sex slavery and they to have sex for money. In Patricia Mccormick’s book “ Sold”, Lakshmi is only 13 years old and her stepdad sold her and she thought she was gonna be a maid but she was sold into sex slavery. Life is priceless, and another person assigning us worth is irrelevant to what we think about ourselves.

To begin, many characters in the book have their own views about Lakshmi’s worth. For example,her stepfather values her as money so he sells Lakshmi into prostitution. Another exampleincluds ama, who values Lakshmi as her daughter, so she gives her advice about the city. A final example is Harish. Harish asks Lakshmi if she wants him to help her to read. Harish asks Lakshmi “Do you want me to teach you how to read the words in the story book.” (163) That quote from the book means that Harish is offering to help Lakshmi get educated, because Lakshmi wants to learn how to read and Harish values her as a friend and as a person. From these examples, we may see that other characters place value on Lakshmi, but she doesn’t let the negative people destroy her she is focused on the positive people.

For instance, she smells her clothes and is reminded of home she thinks the money she made goes to them for food, clothes and a tin roof. Another example includes, Harish teaches her english and hindi- to read, write, and speak in those languages. Finally, Lakshmi values the American. “I don’t care if she thinks I’m in love with him. I don’t care if she thinks I’m a fool. Because I didn’t just hug him. I whispered in his ear and shipped him the flying bird card” (241). It shows that she’s depending on the American to get her out of Happiness House. Even though Lakshmi has experienced unthinkable torture at Happiness House, she continues to value herself.
