Michael is suffering physically, mentally, and emotionally. He indicates that he’s failing his courses. Stress at school is affecting his ability to concentrate on his school work. the stress has become too much for him to handle, that it has led him to have suicidal thoughts. I believe the stress about school, failing, and potentially worrying about letting his parents down has affected his ability to cope with the situation that he has had to resort to other things to help him. With everything that is going on, Michael has been using marijuana, drinking alcohol, and smoking half a pack each day. The first priority in Sondra’s needs is taking care of her basic needs. first priority includes treating Sondra’s dermatitis on her hands. it’s important to treat her hands first as it’s an important need of her body. Her hands allow her to perform her daily task, therefore caring for the hands is needed to be done first. The next priority would be her psychological needs. This psychological priority includes providing her with treatment and communication about her anxiety. By taking care her anxiety, it can potentially minimize or stop the excessive handwashing that she performs. Assuming that the anxiety could be causing the excessive handwashing or there was another underlying cause to it, such as OCD. As Sondra discloses what had happened to her, through the traumatic event of rape, it made it more clear of why she was acting the way she did. Disclosing information about her rape and what she has been going through, demonstrated symptoms and characteristics associated to PTSD. Instead of trying to care for Sondra’s anxiety and hands, the care plan was changed to help her recover from her trauma. The care plan would now be about how to overcome the symptoms of PTSD.
4. Why is sertraline an appropriate recommendation for Sondra?
Sertraline is an appropriate recommendation for Sondra as this medication is an anti-depressant, but as the same time works effectively to help manage symptoms of PTSD. It can also help Sondra with her compulsive handwashing behavior. It also indicates that she will be able to sleep better and have less anxiety. As Sondra was having recurrent thoughts about her rape, this medication will allow her to calm those symptoms of PTSD down and allow her the ability to rest.
