Wayson Choy is his Chinese name but he is mostly called by his english name Sonny. This book is a biography about a famous writer Wayson Choy and his journey from being a little kid to a successful writer. He writes about the experiences of his life and the love and attention he had received from his grandfather, parents, uncles and aunts that never made him feel desolate at any step of life. Sonny is given all the love and affection a child would receive from his/her real parents and all of his wishes were fulfilled i.e he wanted a bed same as his friend had and his mother bought that for him as soon as they moved to their new house. “That’s your new bed, kid,” said the man, flicking the coin in the air” (pg. 129) This memoir is about Sonny …show more content…
He also went to the theatre with his mother and watch chinese plays which shows that his mother wants him to be connected to chinese culture and heritage and that is the reason why he is sent to Chinese school to learn chinese. All of his mother’s efforts result in him knowing some things about Chinese culture and heritage and bit of chinese language. His mother even takes him for donation collections for the Chinese back home. Sonny is more attached to his mother than his father as his father is usually away. He describes the time of war when he lives with his mother and how protective his mother is i.e. she used to takes him at back of the house and would even cover the mail slot so no one can look in. “When the sirens screamed, Mother lit a candle and shut off all the lights, slumping into a chair in the dim, stove-lit kitchen to sit and wait.
