Throughout the text we see many changes happen within the characters. Specifically I noticed the most changes in the narrator. Although Sonny is deemed to be the main character due to the title, I think the most dynamic character is the narrator. As I got deeper into the text I noticed many differences between the two characters. While Sonny is wild and free, the narrator is very pre-cautious. He is a family man and very straight-laced. Even though Sonny is very misunderstood by his brother (the narrator) this is where we see the most change within the narrator. He begins to realize that his brother is “wild, but not crazy”. This is, in my opinion, the part where we see how dynamic Sonny’s brother actually is. It had perviously been so hard for him to face Sonny but he finally did it and that shows how much he developed and changed throughout the text. A connection in the story comes from one of the flashbacks that the narrator has throughout the text. Particularly the one where he is remembering one of his last conversations with his mother, who asks him to watch over Sonny. She said to him, “You got to hold on to your brother, and don’t let him fall”. Sonny’s brother replies, “I won’t let nothing happen to Sonny.” His mother reminded him that he cannot prevent things from happening to Sonny but that he can be there for his brother physically and emotionally. After the narrator returned from war he “pretty well forgot my promise to Mama”. He believed that taking care of his brother also meant that his brother had to live the same lifestyle as him, therefore he gave up because that was never going to happen. It is very easy to overlook the changes within the narrator at first and it took me a minute to realize them as well. But the author makes him the main theme when he adds details of his progress. He is not only becoming conscious of his brother he is also becoming conscious of himself. The last page has a sentence that conveys his feelings towards his brother “And I was yet aware that this was only a
