Sophia’s War, by the talented author Avi, is about a twelve year old girl named Sophia who lives in New York City, with her mother and father in the mid 1700s. When she realizes that her brother is being held prisoner by the British, it is her mission to try and save him. Once he dies, she wants to avenge his death. When a strange man named Mr Townsend asks Sophia to become a spy and work for the British to find information, she is eager to help win the war for the patriots. When Sophia decides she wants to help, Sophia has to walk 50 miles to West Point to stop a meeting that can end the war. Throughout the novel, Avi shows that it is important to have courage to do what needs to be done, which can be seen when Sophia has to get her father’s doctor, when she climbs on the treacherous ship to see her brother, and when she has to walk for miles to help win the war. …show more content…
She has to lie to British soldiers which is life threatening, and takes a lot of courage. “Even as I heard my mother speak, I, recollecting the crier’s call ‘All citizens shall remain in their homes on pain of severe punishment,’ was too fearful to move.” (Avi 32) This quote shows that even though Sophia can be severely punished, she still goes to help her father and save his life. She has to show a lot of courage for the whole thing to get the doctor.

When Sophia has to go on a ship called the ‘Good Intent’ to find her brother and help him. The ship was horrible and was full of patriots imprisoned by the britain. “Though it was icy cold and slippery, I begins to climb.” (Avi 114) This part of the book shows Sophia having courage because even though she can get severely injured or imprisoned by going into the ship.
