The book: Sophie’s World discusses many philosophical movements as well as philosophers. The main characters are Sophie, Alberto and Hilde. Throughout the book, Sophie is trying to find out a series of events: Who is Hilde? Who she is? Where does the world come from? But in order to find all these things she must use the philosophy she learns from Alberto along the way. For this assignment I choose Sigmund Freud’s theory of the unconscious. Alberto goes into detail explaining what each of the terms are and even applying specific examples. He would lie the patient down and begin a conversation in which he let them talk about anything. He would then use the socratic method to get more and more answers out of the patient until he broke through to the patient’s traumas which were keeping the patient concerned. This is known as free association. Freud later stated how dreams are not random but it is when our unconsciousness tries to communicate with our consciousness. He defined that the clear image we see in our dream is called the ‘manifest dream’ (Gardner 433). The manifest dream is almost always related to what you experienced during the previous day. Dreams can also be from earlier childhood, or the distant past which is known as ‘latent dream thoughts’. In order to understand all dreams we must analyze them. Freud states that by converting the latent dream thoughts to the manifest dream is known as ‘dream work’. By doing so, we can uncover what the dream is really about. A lot of times these dreams have a deeper meaning which can relate to what you are sexualy feeling. For example, Alberto states a good example in which a boy dreams about giving two balloons to his cousin.
