Aegisthus: Lover of Clytemnestra and cousin of Agamemnon. He rules Argos with her until he is killed by Orestes.
Agamemnon: King of Argos. Leader of the Greek Army in the Trojan War. Commanded by the Gods to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia so that he would have the power of wind and sea to sail the fleet. This act caused his wife Clytemnestra to hate him and on his return to murder him.
Apollo: Greek god of light, civilisation, poetry and learning. Spokesman for Zeus, patriarchal King of the gods. Influence is strongly felt in the play. Orders Orestes to avenge Agamemnon’s murder by killing Clytemnestra. Advocates in favour of Orestes against the Furies in the trial.
