Rap first started to gain popularity in the United States around the 1970’s. It was most commonly known as street art. In 1979 Sugarhill Gang released their song, ‘Rapper’s Delight,’ and many record producers finally noticed the musical genre. By the 1990’s rap matured from simpler lyrics to more complex and loud lyrics. Some major artists such as Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and Notorious B.I.G. topped the charts. There are many rap styles and themes. Most song themes included ways to obtain money illegally and living in poverty. Rappers have their own unique sound depending on their region. East coast rappers tend to be more rational and have a rougher beat. West coast rappers such as Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and NWA had more commercial success. Southern …show more content…
He sold more than 75 million albums around the world. He became a legend in rap circles for many reasons, his talent, violent behavior, and brutal death being the main three. Tupac was raised by a single mother, Afeni Shakur, who was in jail on alleged bombing charges. He had a rough childhood of moving around very often. He attended Baltimore School for the Arts as a teen, taking dance classes, including ballet, and acting classes. He and his family moved to the West Coast in the late 1980’s where he joined a hip-hop group and in the 1990’s released two EPs before going solo. His first solo single, “Brenda’s Got a Baby” topped the charts at No. 3. Tupac became known for his explicit and violent language, as well as his personality, getting arrested for assault on a director. His song “Dear Mama” that showed a more honest side of Tupac could have also been seen as foreshadowing. There was some bad blood between West Coast and East Coast rappers and Tupac did not help his situations by insulting his enemies in his songs.
