No matter what anyone thinks of the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild, everyone will leave loving Hushpuppy. She is the main character in this film about a six-year-old girl, her dying father, and the strange subculture where she lives. Hushpuppy’s world is seemingly coming apart around her. The area where she lives, called the Bathtub, is in danger of being swallowed up by the ocean. Hushpuppy is also figuring out that her father is not just sick, but he is dying. I think that this movie was a great success because it touched me emotionally, taking me on an extraordinary journey through the eyes of a courageous little girl who is discovering what life means to her. What I found most intriguing was the relationship between Hushpuppy and her father, Wink. Hushpuppy’s father is very crass with her, and doesn’t often show a great deal of emotion, other than anger. This is made most apparent in the scene where she catches her house on fire. After chasing her down and slapping her, he then proceeds to tell her that she is killing him. Since he is actually dying that was extremely harsh and could have been potentially detrimental to Hushpuppy’s psyche. Wink tells his daughter his daughter that she “shouldn’t be cryin’”, as tears stream down his face. Hushpuppy rests her head on his chest, listening as his heartbeat fades away, and then he is gone. The final scene of the movie is truly inspirational. Hushpuppy, along with the rest of her rag tag community, set his funeral pyre ablaze. With an expression of true courage, she holds her head up, and puffs her chest out. As Hushpuppy sends her father off, she affirms that she is a small part of a big universe and someday it will be known that, “once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in the
