Before the Soviet Invasion, Afghanistan was a peaceful country. This country was a popular destination for tourists. Children grew up in safe environments and were unafraid of extremist influence. My mom and her family lived in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. This city was filled with stores, restaurants and hotels. This brought family and friends together. Afghans enjoyed the lifestyle in Afghanistan until it became a war zone country. Before the war began, Soviets helped Afghanistan financially. They provided their government with weapons and money. However, Afghans didn’t want the Soviets in their country because, they believed that they were hurting the government and were already gaining support from the United States and Pakistan. My mom believed that the Soviets were trying to put Afghanistan to a bad end, she was right. In 1979, the peaceful days began to end. The Mujahideen rebelled against the Soviet’s taking control. So, they decided to bomb their own country in order for Afghans to live in their own protection. However, they were only leading them to a downfall in their economy. Unfortunately, older men were not allowed to travel through the bus. They had to walk to Pakistan through the mountains with scarce food and clothing. Walking to Pakistan took three to four days. However, younger children and women took the bus. The bus was tiny and filled with many Afghans seeking for help. Each person had their own story and were all broken in different ways because of the war. There were children without parents and parents crying for their kids and husbands. People were clinging to their small bags since it was the only items that they had from their hometown. All personal items such as pictures, furnitures, clothing, and food were all left at home.
