President William Mckinley has finally announced a peace treaty with Spain! The Spanish-American War lasted from April 1898 to August 1898, four months. It was a war that was declared by Spain due to the U.S agreeing and supporting the Cuban wish to be free from Spain’s rule. During that time, Americans were selling millions of reports about the brutal scenes in the war that was creating more public support for the cubans. On February 15, the USS Maine battleship was sent out to protect any American citizens, it had mysteriously sank into Havana Harbor. The unknown reason on how the ship sank caused the American population in the U.S to intervene in the conflict, they believed that it was all Spain’s fault. The famous American battle cry for their intervention was “Remember the Maine!”. American quickly gathered their equipment and army forces, The Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt was the one who decided to send Commodore George Dewey to the Philippines and Commodore Winfield Scott Schley to Cuba, due to their smart strategic ideas. It is said that the American army was low in equipment, did not have enough soldiers, and that they were under trained for war. The Americans did not have the proper war attire in which all they wore was a woolen coat and pants. The advantage on their side was that Spain was even less prepared than the U.S and so the were easily defeated (USHistory). Spain thought that the Americans would first invade Cuba, but they didn’t expect that they would be attacking on the other side of the world, the Philippine Islands. This first battle was fought in Manila Bay in trying to defend the Philippines. The americans had won this battle which caused the U.S able to obtain the Philippines for $20 million. The second battle was fought in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba where the U.S forces surrounded the Spanish squadron, all their ships were sunk or destroyed.
