For years I’ve been disenchanted with the worship services at my home church. They’ve always seemed too shallow for me to truly engage in the worship. So what is genuine worship? I believe I experienced genuine worship today in church. This week, I went to a Spanish-speaking church called Alas de Águila, Eagle’s Wings. Through personal experience and study of the Bible, I believe one can discern what genuine worship is. I experienced genuine worship today during the Sunday service at the Spanish church near my house. This was a combination of two things that I witnessed: the singing and clapping and where the emphasis was placed. The people at this church sang with everything they had. At my normal church, you see people singing half-heartedly, but not these people. These people brought water and had to take drinks periodically because they were singing with everything they had. At my church, only the people up front need to drink during the service. Not only did they sing with everything, they also clapped enthusiastically. People at my church seem to clap only when they feel obligated, when the people up front encourage them to. The people at this church clapped because they wanted to worship God with everything. Mark says in his gospel that “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mk. 12:30).
