There are many differences in the cultures of the United States and Spanish-speaking countries. Everything from language to social norms is contrasting. Though cultures may merge through time, there will always be traditions that stand the test of time. One major distinction between the cultures is holidays. One of the most celebrated holiday in both cultures is Christmas. In America, we have commercialized the holiday that began as the birth of a savior. Almost everyone celebrates Christmas, whether they are focused on religion or simply a cheerful time of year. We buy and exchange gifts, decorate our homes with Christmas trees, sing carols, and eat huge meals. There are many parties and gift-giving celebrations. We can spend weeks celebrating Christmas, between holiday sales and spending time with friends and family. Many people still celebrate the birth of Jesus, but most focus on the gifts that will await them beneath their Christmas tree. Young children often believe in Santa Claus, a magical old man who comes down chimneys and brings presents to children all over the world. Schools will have time off at this point to celebrate the most important holiday of Catholicism. Some families will visit seven churches on Holy Thursday to commemorate the disciples keeping watch for Jesus. On Good Friday, statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary are often carried through towns. Many towns will reenact the last days of Jesus. Many men work hard to play Jesus, and it is an honor to be chosen. That man will then endure everything that Jesus endured to show respect.
