Seeing the smiles on their faces created a truly unforgettable memory for me and one that will impact my life as I begin my next chapter in college.

When it comes to clubs and activities in high school, many students have tendencies to be afraid or too ‘cool’ to join the ones they are uncertain about. Like most high schoolers, I wanted to get involved with the clubs and activities offered through my high school. My friends and I decided to attend a few introductory club meetings and explore our options. The very last club I inquired with was the one that had the strongest impact on me. It was the Special Olympics Volunteer Club.

The volunteer club spent many hours during the week to practice basketball with the athletes. They were so excited just to practice, and I knew the main event would be a real thrill for all of the competitors. I walked into the gym that morning not knowing what to expect. I was very impressed to walk in on the athletes practicing just like the professionals. I was given the job to referee and keep score of the games and in that moment I experienced a sense of relief for joining such an incredibly rewarding club. I learned more about the game of basketball in just one event than I have my entire life. Between the sportsmanship and the contagious laughter, the athletes made quite the impact on my life that day.

Throughout the year, I enjoyed attending the events just as much as the athletes. It is hard to believe that I questioned being apart of this club at first, but it turned into wanting to become more involved. This year I am planning on running to be on the committee. I also plan to share my memories with hopes that others will want to be apart of it as well.

I took a leap of faith and jumped into the Special Olympics Volunteer Club with my eyes and heart wide open. As a result, I have grown as a person through watching these athletes enjoy themselves without a care in the world, and in turn, made me want to live my life as such.
