Many young people are still maturing and trying to find out who they are as a person. Both Margaret Peterson Haddix in “My People” Gwendolyn Brooks in “Speech to the Young” discuss these issues. Both talk about similar things but in different ways. In both texts, there are people who are still trying to grow up and find out who they are as a person. Both “My People” and “Speech to the Young” discuss the importance of growing up. An example, is when Lindley gets a letter to attend the College for High Schoolers which says, “ Dear Ms. Havens, Congratulations! As the top scorer in your region on the state aptitude test, you are cordially invited to participate in the College for High Schoolers at Mercer University…”. In the story, “My People” Lindley is still trying to figure out who she is as a person, whether she should attend the College for High Schoolers or not. She is still trying to figure out who she wants to be as a person, smart and educated or uneducated and suffering. She wants to attend the college but doesn’t want to make a big fool out of herself. In the text it says, “How can I pull up a chair beside all those smart kids from all over the state ? Don’t you know I’m scared out of my shoes of making a fool out of myself?”. In this piece of evidence it shows how Lindley is still trying to decide what she wants to do. She doesn’t know who she is or if she is going to make a big fool out of herself in front of all those smart people. In “Speech to the Young” people are still trying to figure out who they are as well. Their failures in life are what shape them to be them in the future. Their failures also help them find out who they are as a person. For example, in the text it says, “Live not for the battles won. Live not for the end-of-the-song. Live in the along.” This text evidence means you shouldn’t just give up after something that doesn’t go right in life, this means you are going to have failures and it is not something that you should fret on.
