The Hero’s Journey is a pattern in any type of story recognized by the American scholar Joseph Campbell. It illustrates the typical adventure of a hero, the person who goes out on an adventure, has a victory, and then returns home changed. Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi follows the twelve steps of the Hero’s Journey. Peter Parker is the hero in this film, who goes through his journey and becomes a hero.
Peter Parker begins his journey in his Ordinary World of being an uncomfortable and nerdy high schooler in New York City, who gets bullied and only has two real friends, Mary Jane and Harry Osborn. Once Harry finds out that Spider-Man is who has killed his father he promises to avenge his father by killing Spider-Man. After defeating the Green Goblin, Peter tries to go back to his normal life, and keeps Spider-Man a secret identity. Peter is Rewarded with Spider-Man being praised in his city, and now finally gets Mary Jane. Peter is Resurrected because he now understands the advice given to him by Uncle Ben. He is fighting with himself and with great power comes great responsibility. He now realizes he needs to keep all the civilians safe and by doing so he can not accept Mary Jane as his lover and now has a whole new personality and perspective. Him realizing he can not have Mary Jane is a serious test when he returns home. Peter Returns with the Elixir of knowledge. He brings back a new perspective, and knows of his great responsibility.
Therefore, this is why Spider-Man is true in following the Hero’s Journey. The hero, Peter Parker, goes on an adventure, wins a battle maybe even within himself and returns back with greater knowledge and achieves great deeds on behalf of the
