I have been a part of a high school dance team for the past four years called Spirit Shakers. In order to be a part of the team, you have to endure a week long tryout. The most nerve wracking part of this process is dancing in a group of three to four people in front of eight judges. The tryout process also includes an interview, which is uncommon for most dance teams. The purpose of this is to get to an understanding of who a person is before tryouts.Who you are as a person is the most important quality in a Spirit Shaker. Every year at the tryout information session our coach says she is looking for someone who is a good person, a good student, and lastly a good dancer. I have also learned many valuable life skills, one of which being how to do well in an interview. Even though I may have had more than a few bad experiences with members of the team, I would not be the person I am today without it. Rule 1: The common goal Swales (1990) The first rule describes a discourse community having “a broadly agreed set of common goals.” (p. 12). The most obvious goal of Spirit Shakers is to promote school spirit and support the school. We do this by making posters for every sports team at the school and decorating their locker rooms. On rare occasions we even show up at their senior night to cheer them on for a few minutes. While we only dance at football and basketball games, we still go out of our way to make sure every sport at Dobyns-Bennett feels seen. However, that is not the only goal of Spirit Shakers. What most fail to realize is our small goals. Even though the majority of our time is spent making posters or decorating, we are still a dance team.
