The exposition is when we are introduced to the Alazova family who had immigrated to the United States from Kazakhstan. The main character is 9th grader named Maya, the issue or conflict that brings the family to America is a lack of money; both of her parents lost their jobs due to no government funding and got a sponsored move to America from their aunt who had married a veteran from a dating magazine. Maya’s personal and main conflict is that she wants to go to the Spring Fling yet she does not think she will be able to get permission from her parents to go.

One of the two Rising Actions is when Maya is in class and she is thinking about ways she could ask to get permission to go to the dance. As she is trying to find a way to ask, she is called down to the principal’s

Maya and Daniel dance together and Nurzhan goes to the bathroom while Maya is dancing with Daniel to give her some space, while still fulfilling his duty as her chaperone.

The resolution of this story is that the school dance actually ends up helping to adapt better into American culture. As proven when Maya’s mother realizes that things are different in America, and says “Boys and girls dance younger here,” while giving Maya the bracelet she wore for her first dance and also by allowing Maya and Nurzhan to attend the dance it shows that both of her parents are starting to understand and become more accustomed to the customs
